Commonwealth Day Celebrations
02 Mar 2016

GEORGE TOWN (Wednesday, 2 March 2016) –

In the Cayman Islands, commemorative activities begin with the annual Church Service in observance of Commonwealth Day at the Saint George’s Anglican Church on Sunday, 13 March 2016, commencing at 4:00 p.m. The sermon will be preached by Rev. Stanwyck D. Myles, Pastor of the West Bay Church of God.

There will be a Garden Reception immediately after the service. The church service is open to the public, and nationals of Commonwealth member countries who are resident in or visiting the Cayman Islands especially encouraged to attend.

On Commonwealth Day, schools will share in morning assemblies, view schools exhibitions, or participate in flag parades or storytelling, with students dressing up as their counterparts from other countries of the Commonwealth.

The annual meeting of the Cayman Islands Youth Parliament, organized by the Cayman Islands branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, will also be held in the Legislative Assembly on Commonwealth Day. High school students will have the opportunity to act as members of the Legislative Assembly for a day, debating a motion dealing with the establishment of a master public transportation system.

The 2016 Essay Competition has been launched based on the same theme of “An Inclusive Commonwealth”. Last year, for the very first time, the Cayman Islands enjoyed a place at the top of this global competition, when Martina Watler, a student at St. Ignatius School, was named as the Junior Runner-up.
